The Silver Case demo is on Steam. For real.

As some of you may recall, around eight months ago, I was bandying about the notion of a fan translation for this little crazy game.

In a move that is as big a case as can possibly be made for the existence of a higher power, Playism and Active Games Media decided to localize it.

And everyone at iwakura.p breathed a massive sigh of relief.

Make no mistake, people: this would have been the project from hell. The Silver Case is a multimedia MONSTER! Live action footage, anime, a multitude of art styles, and a script so massive that Robert Jordan would go ‘okay, get that man an editor’.

It’s also a PS1 game that is seventeen years old.

And it’s on Steam. Right now. You can actually PLAY A TRANSLATED VERSION OF THE SILVER CASE, LEGITIMATELY, ON PC.

In short, it is a MIRACLE that this is happening.

Can’t stress that enough. Small bonus: this is the first chapter of the ‘Kill The Past’ trilogy that leads into Flower, Sun, and Rain, and ends with Killer7. This is Suda51 at his prime, in full-tilt crazy mode. And a fantastic translation team took it on, so this is really the perfect storm.

In the demo, of the first chapter titled ‘Decoyman’, two detectives are hot on the trail of a legendary killer named Kamui Uehara… and an elite special forces team realizes they may be in way over their heads.

So uh, yeah.

PSA: BlazBlue’s dub is quietly being killed off.

I’ve made the rounds with this as much as I can; to several forums I visit, twitter, and even Reddit. Not really picking up any steam. Doubt a little blog post will make a difference, but the least I can do is try.

So Guilty Gear Xrd had a dub. No one really expected it, but no one complained much either(to my knowledge, anyway). No game before it had a dub. And apparently Xrd will be the last: Revelator did not receive a dub at all. So in a way, it was back to the status quo.

BlazBlue is a COMPLETELY different story.

For FIVE releases now(CT, CS, CSE, CP, CPE), each game has been fully dubbed, and as the above video hopefully shows, very well.

However, there’s been no word about the forthcoming Central Fiction console release having a dub. Not only is this the last game in the series, it also sends two bad messages: one, that the dub is no longer important.

And much worse, that neither Aksys(https://twitter.com/aksysgames) nor Arc System Works(https://twitter.com/ArcSystemWorksU) care to comment. Nor will the localization company they’ve outsourced to, Strangely Compelling(https://twitter.com/itscompelling).

I’ve asked them all for comment repeatedly, as have fans, to no avail.

I was flat-out told that Aksys no longer oversee the BB localizations. It’s all up to Arc System Works, who in turn outsourced it. So we’ve had nothing but silence to go by… until Patrick Seitz himself, the voice of Ragna, finally chimed in.

Cristina Vee(the voice of Noel) joined in as well, adding another nail to the CF dub coffin.

Not looking good, is it?

So there’s one of two things that can happen. Well, three, but I’d say the third is about as likely as Yoko Taro securing the Democratic Nomination.

  1. Sit back and let the dub quietly die, which I’m sure fans if not Aksys will quietly confirm at launch.
  2. Give them hell. Blitz Aksys and ArcSys’ twitter and send every media contact you know an email. No media sites have covered this, and I’ve emailed just about every major one of note. Here’s a few!  siliconera@gmail.com,  editor@gematsu.com, bashcraft@kotaku.com, jason@kotaku.com. I’ve emailed all four, and none of those three sites have covered the story. Maybe if enough people make noise, they will. Not bloody likely, but hey, we tried.
  3. The dub actually happens, whether it was planned all along or we change their minds(ha). Again, not counting on this at all.

So hopefully this was enlightening at worst, causes you to take some action at best. Don’t let the dub die without a fight.

Wizardry Empire II Plus Fan Translation Released!

I’ve been slacking on my duties as a fan translation reporter.

Gonna get back on that horse.

Wizardry Empire II‘s fan translation was just released. Our very own EsperKnight helped program this, so consider your support as indirectly supporting iwakura.p.

You’re also playing an awesome RPG, so bonus.

This was developed by Starfish of Elminage fame, so I’m sure it’s great.

Progress Updates And Stuff

Due to a few requests for updates…

cdczqjoviaagxko

Okay, several.

Fate/Extra CCC

Organizational phases. @ItsumoKnight is currently laying out the script by chapter to match up with our translation. When you have a project this massive, translating things out of context just won’t do.

I’d say 20% organized. We have translation work going concurrently. Hard to explain. It’s one of those things that when I have something tangible to show, I will. But it is still a thing. Just don’t expect any reliable timeframe just yet.

On the bright side, I did retranslate the OPs to get my feet wet, so have an enjoy. As with my usual song lyric translations, I did my best to match the translation syllables to the JP pronunciation. So sing along! OR DIE. ❤

Male:

Female:

Sakura Wars

Just got a new scenario update. It’s sitting at somewhere between 40-50% complete, and we have a new organizational method, so expect things to progress faster from here.

You’re not the boss of me.

Persona 2: Eternal Punishment

Waiting on more script extractions. Shop text is largely finished. I’d say it’s at 25%.

Shadowrun

In need of a new translator, also mired in bugs. Still on hold. NOT CANCELLED. NEVER. MARK MY WORDS. (Put it in Red, Beato.)

The Silver Case

Officially cancelled. In case you haven’t heard, Playism is officially localizing it, in conjunction with Suda51 himself.

Please give them your support.

See you next time.

[Post Mortem] Summon Night 5

I have a friend who describes disappointing or mediocre films as ‘cute’. Probably the only time I’ve heard the word used in a derogatory sense.  Still, it caught on with me. Whenever I play something that I enjoyed, but fell short of being really memorable or gripping, I define it as ‘cute’.

Summon Night 5 is a quintessential cute RPG.

There’s nothing inherently wrong with the game. Working Designs’ Victor Ireland handled the localization, so of course the writing is on point. All the characters have great, clearly defined personalities, and witty, enjoyable dialogue.

The problem is they’re in kind of a boring, empty world.

Sure, it’s a well realized world, but there’s not much happening there. A gang is running around kidnapping spirits, and eventually evil nasty critters show up. They die, you go back to your happy life.

What I WILL say in the game’s favor is that it is not easy. Don’t think you can just rush in and steamroll enemies. They have that trademark ‘move too far and everyone blitzes you’ AI. It’s hardly innovative, but it means you won’t be plowing through the game.
The late game in particular, with nigh endless respawning enemies and bosses with massive HP, was incredibly frustrating. If it wasn’t for careful strategy, lots of grinding, and a dash of sheer dumb luck(the weakest character in my team punching the final boss in the face for the killing blow), I’d probably still be playing it.

Let me be clear: Summon Night 5’s a fun world to play around in. It’s just after you visit, you can’t really think of a reason to go back, apart from seeing the other protagonist’s story. The male and female leads are each well fleshed out and have clearly defined personalities as well(always a plus), but again, there isn’t much for them to do besides be the generic anime hero.

There’s nothing wrong with the standard shounen anime, mind you, but wouldn’t you rather be watching something like Fate/Zero instead?

Oh, and by the way:

Best. Fishing game. Ever.

[April Fools] The Fate/Stay Night Retranslation Project

After long months of planning, we’re finally ready to reveal our trump card. CCC, Sakura Wars, Ougon Musou, Shikigami, and Shadowrun were all mere tests to see if we could pull this off.

Now I know we can. Iwakura Productions proudly presents, in the grand tradition of MOBILE LIGHT FORCE 2 and CHERRY TREE HIGH COMEDY CLUB(tm):

3

I’m sure you’ve felt the same way I have. Fate/Stay Night, with its convoluted focus on mythology, romantic drama, and outdated Japanese traditions is far too obtuse for an American audience, so we are proud to finally give Fate/Stay Night the translation it DESERVES!

2

No longer set in the boring town of Fuyuki City. Oh no. Fate/Stay Night Hyper Retranslation Extreme Justice Remix(FSN HREJR for short) will now take place in the sprawling suburban land of FREDRICKSBURG.

1

Each and every character has been given a new American name, in keeping with the time-honored tradition of classic localization. In addition to their new names, fans can expect a totally relocated plot.Every story element, weapon, and reference will be adjusted to match. Have no idea who Cu Chulainn is? Lost in Arthurian mythology? Don’t give a flying hell about silly Kendo swordplay? This is the translation for you!

We’ll be proud to unveil more about this translaton as the weeks go on. Nasu has already given his approval, and we plan on a full release for a wide variety of systems. Included but not limited to PS Vita, Dreamcast, the Saturn, the Amiga, and the Game Gear.

Stay tuned, space cats. Who needs CCC, anyway? This will put Fate on the MAP!

iwakura.p’s state of the union

“When’s CCC?” “Where’s Sakura Wars?” “Give Shadowrun plz” “SILVER CASE WHEN!?”

And so on and so on. Just a few of the many questions I get on the regular, and understandably so.

To that end, here’s updates on each of the three projects that I’m actively leading, and one that I’m actively helping on, as well as others that I’d eventually plan to do but have not even come close to starting yet.
